Applying for a government job in India is almost entirely online now, but the process trips up thousands of candidates every year — a missed date, a wrong photo size, or an unpaid fee can cost you the whole attempt. This guide walks through the standard application flow so you can apply with confidence, whether it is SSC, a state PSC, railways, banking, or a department recruitment.
Step 1 — Start from the official notification
Every genuine recruitment begins with an official notification (PDF) on the department’s own website. Read it fully before doing anything else. It lists the number of vacancies, eligibility, important dates, application fee, exam pattern, and the official portal link. On AJS Alerts we link every verified alert back to its official notification — always confirm details there before you apply.
Step 2 — Check eligibility carefully
Confirm you meet every requirement before spending time on the form:
- Age — as on the cut-off date in the notification (not today’s date). Note any relaxation for reserved categories.
- Qualification — the exact degree/marks and whether final-year students may apply.
- Category & domicile — some state posts are limited to state residents.
Step 3 — Keep your documents ready
Scan these in advance, in the sizes the notification specifies (usually JPEG):
- Recent passport-size photograph and signature
- Class 10 / 12 and degree certificates
- Category / EWS / PwD certificate, if applicable
- A valid photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, etc.)
Step 4 — Register on the official portal
Create an account on the recruitment portal using a working email and mobile number — you will receive the registration number, admit card, and result updates there. Note down the registration ID and password safely.
Step 5 — Fill the application form
Enter your details exactly as they appear on your certificates. A mismatch in name or date of birth is one of the most common reasons applications are rejected. Save each section as you go.
Step 6 — Upload photo, signature and documents
Upload files in the exact dimensions and file-size limits given. If the portal rejects an image, resize it rather than compressing it into a blur.
Step 7 — Pay the application fee
Pay online (UPI / net banking / card) where a fee applies. Many categories (SC/ST/PwD/women) are fee-exempt — check the notification. Your application is not complete until the fee shows as paid.
Step 8 — Submit and save the confirmation
Review everything once more, submit, and download the final confirmation page or PDF. Keep the registration number and a printout until the recruitment is over.
Quick tips to avoid rejection
- Apply a few days before the deadline — portals slow down or crash on the last day.
- Use the same name spelling and date of birth across every field and document.
- Never pay any “agent” — official government applications only charge the notified fee, on the official portal.
